In India, digital transformation of government administration has become an important part of administrative reform. Traditional government offices have been heavily dependent on physical files, manual movement of documents and paper-based procedures, which may lead to delays, difficulties in tracking files and extensive record-management needs. The e-Office is an attempt to overcome these limitations and convert the traditional file based processes into electronic workflows. This paper describes the role of e-Office in increasing the efficiency of administration in India with special focus on electronic file movement, faster processing, monitoring, paperless administration and record management. Based on secondary sources, including government reports and relevant literature, the paper concludes that e-Office has helped reduce dependency on physical files, improved monitoring, and facilitated continuity of administrative work. Its importance was most visible during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, its effectiveness is dependent on adequate infrastructure, training of employees, cyber security and process re-engineering. The paper claims that e-Office can be a meaningful administrative reform if digitalization is accompanied by simplification and restructuring of existing administrative procedures.
